A blooming watergarden
The cleaning of the foundations of the former gas holders caused the escape of a wave of malodorous fumes: the cellars had been used for years as a dump for toxic slurry. The decontamination cost a great deal of time and money.
A water garden has been laid out in the eastern pond, with irises and blue-blooming pickerelweed. The western section is a water lily pond containing four varieties, where you will see water birds gently bobbing around in the water and perhaps the occasional turtle swimming by.
The decking platforms over the ponds edge are tranquil spots for relaxation and picnics. In the summer months, the Gashouder ponds are sometimes used for theatre performances.
