From 7 June until the end of September, Cool Globes Inc. and West Amsterdam council are presenting Cool Globes Amsterdam, a colourful and free outdoor festival. Westergasfabriek Culture Park will be the central location for this exhibition of 50 globes placed throughout the local area and featuring paintings and drawings by Dutch and international artists making a warm plea for a cooler world.

The idea for Cool Globes arose from the Clinton Global Initiative in 2005. Its was to create a public exhibition to increase awareness of solutions to climate change throughout the world. 2007 saw the premiere Cool Globes event in Chicago, featuring colourful, human-sized globes presenting a mix of big and small and idealistic and practical ideas on how to tackle climate problems. After Chicago, this outdoor exhibition moved on to other cities in the US: Washington, San Francisco, San Diego, Sundance, Los Angeles and Houston. Autumn 2009 saw the first Cool Globes exhibition outside the United States, in Copenhagen. Last year these globes for a better climate were displayed at Science World in Vancouver, on the banks of Lake Geneva and in the streets of Marseille.

The Dutch premiere in West Amsterdam will be on 7 June 2011. The main location will be Westergasfabriek Culture Park where 50 of the globes will be displayed. Most will have come from other countries, but some will be painted and illustrated by Dutch artists, and these will be auctioned off at the end of the exhibition at the end of September.
