People come to Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek to meet, work and relax. This beautiful city park, with its historic factory buildings surrounded by expanses of green, also has workplaces, venues for large and small events, and a range of catering, film, theatre and exhibition facilities.

Meetingplace

The Westergasfabriek develops and rents out spaces for creative, cultural and innovative entrepreneurs. We want to inspire a broad public and provide leisure opportunities in an exciting, sustainable and friendly environment. The Westergasfabriek is a meeting place for enterprising local, domestic and foreign visitors with refreshing ideas.

Exciting and refreshing

The Westergasfabriek encourages the use of its spaces for creative events, ensuring the area keeps its exciting and refreshing atmosphere. We participate in cultural projects and support collaborations between our business tenants. We use online media and our modern digital infrastructure to inform the general public about what we stand for and what we’re up to here at the Westergasfabriek.

From old energy to new energy

When the Westergasfabriek reopened in 2003, the complex had undergone a complete metamorphosis. The polluted site was cleaned up and turned into a beautiful park, a real asset for the city. The Westergasfabriek is regarded as a model for redevelopment, far beyond the Netherlands’ borders.

The Westergasfabriek is now keen to complete the transition from brownfield to greenfield and to do everything it can to become a completely ‘green’ and sustainable park. From old energy provider to new energy provider: not just energy in terms of gas and electricity, but energy in the sort of events we host and the energy we impart to visitors through our green ambitions.

The Westergasfabriek (combination of park and buildings) is a public-private partnership. The buildings are privately owned by the Westergasfabriek BV. The park is public territory, owned by the Municipality of Amsterdam.

Cultural enterprise

The limited company Westergasfabriek BV is an unsubsidised cultural enterprise that leases out the buildings to orgnaizations and for events. The company employs people who find and select tenants, event managers who keep the planning on track, and communications staff who maintain good and close contact with our visitors and customers.

the District Council West Amsterdam manages the park’s public space and issues permits for the public events that are held in the buildings and surrounding area. It is also responsible for activities in the park such as the fun fair and the large outdoor festivals during summer. The council also programmes its own events in the park.

Working together

Strictly speaking the Westergasfabriek BV is responsible for the programming in the buildings and  District Council West Amsterdam manages the park and outside events. However, the combination of the park and the buildings is perceived as one entity. Therefore there is frequent consultation between the District Council, the Westergasfabriek BV and the tenants regarding the daily operation as well as the long term vision on future developments.
